How to win in the service industry

Jul 19 2011 Published by Tyron Bache under Business

Let me just clarify the industry that I am currently in.
I am a web developer, I develop websites for my company Smashing Web Development. I can say without a doubt that I run a service business. Yes I code and build websites, edit CSS and create lines and lines of HTML but at the end of the day my business sinks and floats on how well I serve my clients.

So if you are starting out in the “service” industry (any industry in which you deal with clients) here is some advice to make sure you win.

Answer every email briefly, positively and honestly. No one likes to read a negative email, heck, very few people like to read email at all so keep it short. People may not remember what you said on the phone or in a meeting but they can always go back and check an email. Don’t lie.

Under promise and over deliver. Easy to say but hard do. When trying to win a client I know you try and put your best foot forward and you tell them all of the lovely things you can do for them but don’t promise them the world and then give them the moon. No one can eat that much cheese.

So now you know. Go on, go be awesome.

The importance of working on your best idea

Jun 14 2011 Published by Tyron Bache under Business, Inspiration, Quotes

This post has been a long time coming and was inspired by David Heinemeier Hansson or DHH‘s blog post, Work on your best idea.

I shall share my two favourite quotes from that post below:

Why would you want to pour so much of yourself into anything less than your best idea? Other ideas might seem more achievable or convenient, but if your heart and mind is elsewhere it’s all for naught.

So what is my best idea right now? It has to be my business, Smashing Web Development. Am I working on it as much as I should? The short answer is no. What needs to change? That is something I am trying to answer.

Are you working on your best idea right now?

Does your best idea keep you awake at night? Does it keep you occupied all through out the day? Are you so passionate about it that everything else becomes second? These are some of the questions I am asking myself.

Life is short. Stop playing Angry Birds. Go work on your best idea.

Where have I been?

Dec 03 2010 Published by Tyron Bache under Blogging

Shocking, I have just seen that I didn’t post a single article on this blog during the month of November.
I wasn’t even growing a “mo” so I can’t use that as an excuse.

Here is a list of things that kept me busy during November:

I’m not sure how December is going to go with regard to blog posts but we will see what happens.

What have you been up to?

Startup Quote

Sep 22 2010 Published by Tyron Bache under Blogging, Business, Quotes

One of my favourite tumblr blogs is Startup Quote, I love quotes and business, this blog combines both perfectly!

It produces the most insightful quotes with lovely images.

Here is one of my favourite quotes:

Seth Godin

The only thing worse than starting something and failing… is not starting something.

- Seth Godin

You can follow Startup Quote on twitter @startupquote.

And the best part about this blog is that you can submit your own quotes at http://startupquote.com/submit, speaking of which, I was inspired tonight chatting to one of my customers from Smashing Web Development. It made me think up this:

“How do you know if your product/service is great? Your customers become your sales force.”

-Tyron Bache

What do you think? If you think it’s good enough to go on the Startup Quote blog then please submit it for me via twitter by tweeting this:

Submit @StartupQuote How do you know if your product/service is great? Your customers become your sales force. – Tyron Bache

Thank you so much!
Do you have any wise startup quotes?

What you put in is what you get out

May 24 2010 Published by Tyron Bache under Business, Inspiration, Video

David and Marc Perel talking about achieving success with your blog. They say success comes from hard work, dedication, self-discipline and focus! This video is very aptly found on the about us page of their awesome video blog From the couch. I just love the question that Dave poses, “How badly do you want it?”, How badly do you want success? Rewards will come to those who work hard and as Marc says, “you can get 3 pairs of shoes and a pair of pants”. This is brilliant inspiration as in just over a week my brother, Quin and I shall be launching Smashing Web Development.

Smashing Web Development Launch

May 20 2010 Published by Tyron Bache under Business, Video, Web Development

Smashing Web DevelopmentIt has always been a dream of mine to start my own business and I am almost there, it has been a long time coming but I am proud to announce that I shall be launching Smashing Web Development on the 1st of June 20ten. I am going to be working with my brother Quin, we both currently work together so there shouldn’t be too much to get used to. I came up with the idea for smashing on the 8th of February 20ten and finally some four months later we are almost ready to launch. Very basically we are going to be developing & selling websites as BlueBox Partners. All of this has lead me to the question of how do you launch an online business these days? What are the best tactics? Should you host an offline event? Or just keep it all online? If you have any ideas or suggestions let me know, I am keen to hear your thoughts. For now you can have a look at our teaser launch video below or you can head over to our splash page where you can follow us on twitter to receive further updates on our developments.
