So what happened in April & May?

May 26 2011 Published by Tyron Bache under Blogging, Business, Web Development

To answer the question in the title very briefly… lots.

I know a post like this can be quite clichéd and I have even tweeted about it while writing it.

I have been a busy boy blogging, creating videos, developing websites and being awesome.

I have started blogging for the company I work for, The BlueBox. I usually blog about web development on The BlueBox platform. You can check it out here – http://blueboxwebdev.tumblr.com/ – if you are interested in that sort of thing.

Unfortunately I haven’t done much reading although I am slowly working my way through, The 4-Hour Body by Tim Ferriss. I was sold when I saw the trailer for this book.

Direct link.

I also took a much needed family vacation at the end of April down the lovely south coast of KZN, South Africa, that was a real treat and I even went to the Waffle House.

During the past two months, I have launched 2 more websites for my business Smashing Web Development. I completed the Wesley Methodist Church and the AHvR websites, and I am very proud of them both.

I have done some awesome work with Julie Patrick and I am really looking forward to getting stuck into the new ARISEFEST website for this year. By the way Julie is amazing at taking photo’s. Below is the new design/poster for this years festival.

That’s it for now, hopefully it won’t be another two months until my next post.

Thoughts on wireframes

Aug 11 2010 Published by Tyron Bache under Web Development

This post was going to be called Me and my little blue book but it wasn’t.
It is however called Thoughts on wireframes and that is exactly what I am going to write about.

wireframes – a visual map of a webpage or a user interface that outlines layout and function of elements that helps define how pages appear and behave.

www.loetus.com/glossary-of-terms/

I can’t start a new website or web page without a wireframe, I believe it’s one of the best forms of planning you can do, it’s cheap, it’s quick (if you know what you want) and it’s your road map to a HOT layout.

So many brilliant quotes were thrown in front of my eyes today and I would like to share them with you.

A view into the Forrst

Jun 09 2010 Published by Tyron Bache under Social Media, Web Development

Right so how many of you have heard about Kyle Bragger‘s Forrst? Raise your hands please…

Okay, a few of you have, thanks you can lower you hands now.

Forrst is a place for designers and developers to share screenshots, links, code, and questions with their peers. I do however love the way that Carsonified have described it: Where Designers Who Code meet Developers Who Design.

Forrst is still in beta and is invite-only which when I first stumbled upon it made me a little curious, I applied and got accepted today, stoked, I think I am #2,483. If you have an account you can view my profile here.

My first impressions, I must say I am a little bias because I did get accepted… anyway I love the home page, it has been beautifully done and the moving clouds in the background are a lovely touch. When I first heard about it I thought it was just a Dribbble copy but I am still waiting for my Dribbble invite so that I can’t make an informed judgement on that… yet and I am not sure who cam first. Once logged in the UI is awesome, good to look at and pretty easy to use, they have made sharing effortless. One thing I can say is that Forrst accepts developers and not just designers which I am happy about being a developer. There is tons of content flying around in the forrst and I am keen to get stuck in and find some real gems which obviously I will share with you guys.

Smashing Web Development Launch

May 20 2010 Published by Tyron Bache under Business, Video, Web Development

Smashing Web DevelopmentIt has always been a dream of mine to start my own business and I am almost there, it has been a long time coming but I am proud to announce that I shall be launching Smashing Web Development on the 1st of June 20ten. I am going to be working with my brother Quin, we both currently work together so there shouldn’t be too much to get used to. I came up with the idea for smashing on the 8th of February 20ten and finally some four months later we are almost ready to launch. Very basically we are going to be developing & selling websites as BlueBox Partners. All of this has lead me to the question of how do you launch an online business these days? What are the best tactics? Should you host an offline event? Or just keep it all online? If you have any ideas or suggestions let me know, I am keen to hear your thoughts. For now you can have a look at our teaser launch video below or you can head over to our splash page where you can follow us on twitter to receive further updates on our developments.

Jason Fried on Development

May 13 2010 Published by Tyron Bache under Business, Video, Web Development

Link to the video

The points I love.

  • Most products suck because the design is bad because it can’t be good, it’s not allowed to be good and it wasn’t part of the process from the beginning.
  • Be happy with what you are building, don’t let the sales people dictate what gets created and shipped as the final product.
  • You need to have a vision for your product.
  • What sort of company are you going to be? Mediocore and just add stuff you really don’t need.
  • What do you need to say no to?
  • Cashflow will follow the integrity

You can follow Jason Fried for more of his wisdom.
