I found this while reading Di Smith‘s book You’re Awesome, it’s the opening paragraph of a chapter entitled Conquer Your Fear. (Disclaimer: she is a client of mine.)

I love this question, it makes me think of quite a few things! However I almost prefer it phrased in a slightly different way.

What would you try if you knew you couldn’t fail?

I honestly and truly believe this is should be the first question asked of any learner in school or some form of higher education before they settle on a career. So if any of you out there who are reading this and are gong to be giving a speech at a prize giving or graduation please pose this question to them.

What would you try if you had no fear?

In closing, I hope you realise that if you are reading this then you are privileged and have an education and probably are well off. Don’t waste what you have been blessed with, go make the most of your life. If you left fear behind and are doing something remarkable I would love to hear about it.

The importance of working on your best idea

This post has been a long time coming and was inspired by David Heinemeier Hansson or DHH‘s blog post, Work on your best idea.

I shall share my two favourite quotes from that post below:

Why would you want to pour so much of yourself into anything less than your best idea? Other ideas might seem more achievable or convenient, but if your heart and mind is elsewhere it’s all for naught.

So what is my best idea right now? It has to be my business, Smashing Web Development. Am I working on it as much as I should? The short answer is no. What needs to change? That is something I am trying to answer.

Are you working on your best idea right now?

Does your best idea keep you awake at night? Does it keep you occupied all through out the day? Are you so passionate about it that everything else becomes second? These are some of the questions I am asking myself.

Life is short. Stop playing Angry Birds. Go work on your best idea.

Probably the best Twitter advice I have heard

So that is quite a title so I guess I really need to step up and deliver something special. Earlier in the year I shared some Twitter advice for Entrepreneurs on Ideate from my own limited experience but this one point I am going to share with you is better than all 5 I shared.

I can’t claim this as my as mine, I really wish it was though, it’s so simple and when training people on how to use Twitter effectively I am probably going to start with this quote by David Perel from a GQ article.

Here’s my theory, if you can’t stand on a chair in front of 1000+ people, and shout out loud what you going to tweet, then don’t tweet it.

Nobody, if only very few, people want to see tweets like the following:

Party tweets like “Omg myself and @ @ @ @ @ are having so much fun at this exclusive party”… Get over yourselves. When people tweet when they are sick…

Now David does know what he is talking about, he has been on Twitter since 2008 and has close to 6000 followers. It’s simple really, next time you are about to tweet imagine you’re at an event with 1000 close family, friends and people whom you admire and think to yourself would they appreciate what I have to say and if not then maybe you shouldn’t say it. I am probably guilty of not doing this myself so this is a challenge to us all to make Twitter a fantastic part of our days rather than reading about someone’s latest party, sickness or blog post.

A conversation with Jason Fried

One of the reasons I love Twitter is because you can connect with people and I did just that, I connected with one of my heroes, Jason Fried.

If you don’t know who Jason Fried is try Googling him. So how did the conversation begin you might ask? Well Jason tweeted about his latest Inc. Magazine article, Don’t Exaggerate Your Size, which I read rather quickly and could relate to as I am currently running a one man company of my own, Smashing Web Development. I then paused and thought that I had never seen Jason publish content via a personal website or blog and wondered why. I then headed over to Google to go and see if I could find such a place, a personal haven for Jason online, but I couldn’t.

I found this Friedisms, a parody, and asked him if it was his or if he had a website or blog. He tweeted back and said it wasn’t his but he wish they kept it up though. The posts there ran dry about a year ago.

I then stumbled across jasonfried.com and I thought this was it but it wasn’t to be as Jason quickly replied and said that he didn’t own it.

I then pestered him with one last question, which was if he had a specific reason he didn’t have a personal website and threw in some flattery to sweeten the tweet. In true Jason Fried style he answered brilliantly; he doesn’t have anything more to say on a personal site that he doesn’t say elsewhere.

I didn’t want to drag it out any longer as I had lots to do so I agreed with and thanked Jason for answering all of my questions. Finally he was even kind enough to reply to that.

So, in summary, why doesn’t Jason Fried have a personal website?
Because he doesn’t need one, he says all he needs to say exactly where it needs to be said.

A brief guide to world domination – Cheat Sheet

I was greeted by neat and tidy typography on the home page that read as follows, “How to Live a Remarkable Life in a Conventional World.” By Chris Guillebeau

That was two nights ago, I am now going to sharing some thoughts and extracts from this marvelous manifesto that you can download below

A Brief Guide to World Domination.

How is this for an introduction:
“If you want it badly enough, and are willing to make some changes in your life to cause it to happen, you too can take over the world… or do anything else you really want to do. Here is Chris’ toolkit for world domination:

  • Relentless Passion – By far the most important thing you need in the toolkit is an intense passion for your cause that can not be hindered by critics or your own shortcomings. You have to be willing to give it your all, and for a long time with potentially few rewards. In the short run, few people will notice, but in the long run, everyone will. Or at least, everyone you need to influ­ence in your campaign will notice.
  • A Compelling Story – I went to West Africa in 2002 because I heard the story of how a hospital ship needed volunteers to come work in desperate countries like Sierra Leone. It was a compelling story that profoundly affected my life, and my wife and I made a two-year commitment to work for free without even visiting first.
  • One-Way Communication – Yes, social networking is here to stay, but you also need some kind of pulpit. You need to be able to speak to your army directly. This can be done through a web site, a blog, a newsletter, an email list, a phone broadcast, or something else.
  • Enough Time – You have to be able to devote significant time to improving your skills. You don’t just want to be good enough; you want to be remarkable. What this means is different for everyone – some people are able to pursue world domination in their off hours, while others will need more time.
  • Enough Money – Your goal will probably require some amount of money. How much do you need? Simply put, you need enough money to accomplish the goal—no more, no less. Figure out what the true cost is and then figure out how to get it. Work the math out backwards.
  • Friends of Friends – A small army is critical, but in the long run, the friends of your friends may end up helping even more.
  • A Small Army – You need to recruit a small army of com­mitted believers who will support your cause and add their own resources in support of it. How many people do you need? Well, obviously it varies, but 1,000 true fans is a great start. In fact, a small, devoted army is far better than a large, uncommitted mob.
  • Expert Status in Skills that Help Others – As we’ve seen here, you can’t just take over the world for yourself. You have to add value to others, or no one will want to help you. Therefore, you need to have skills that will radically improve the lives of others. Does your world domination plan have an educational component?
  • A Very Specific Goal – In the modern-day classic Good To Great, Jim Collins tells the story of his wife deciding to compete in the 1985 Ironman race. One day she looks up at the break­fast table and says, “I think if I give up everything else—grad school offers, the full-time job, most of my other hobbies—I can actually win the Ironman.” Just like that. And then she makes it her very specific goal, devotes every day for three years to achieving it, and comes in first place despite a severe hamstring injury that caused her a lot of pain on the 26.2 mile run.

“By the way, planning is great, but when it comes to acting, I prefer the ready-fire-aim method, and I prefer to start sooner rather than later. You can always make changes later on, but if you never begin, you’ll never know what could have hap­pened if you tried.”
